Sunday morning in Alliance, Nebraska, I filled up with gas and drove away. I completely forgot to go in and pay. Three and a half hours of sleep don’t make me the sharpest bowling ball in the grocery store, if you know what I mean. Anyway, two minutes later, I realized my criminal mistake, and whipped around to go back and pay. When I got back to the station, there were 7 people just staring at me in disbelief. The cashier was on the phone with guess who……The local po-lice. She cancelled the call when I came in armed w/apologies and a couple of Andrew Jacksons. Afterward, she said I made her day, as no one ever had driven off before from her station. Talk about a little Sunday morning excitement. The police drove thru the parking lot and then tailed us around town for about an hour while we stopped for breakfast and hit the hardware store. Once we got out of town, we were home free. What a close one. I’d have been really embarassed to get arrested, and some of you probably know why……………
After that we went to Carhenge, the Stonehenge replica made out of old automobiles. There were a number of Ford Galaxies in the display, and it was a lot of fun to see. It’s definitely worth the trip to Alliance to see it. Maggie raced thru the fields like a blur, happy to be out of camper confinement. She was a happy puppy the rest of the day as we drove to Mt. Rushmore ( see video ), then to Wall Drug for dinner. Wall Drug was closing as we pulled up. Darn, I really wanted that commemorative ceramic thimble collection of the 18 original counties of South Dakota. Now I can only dream of the day when I add that to my curio cabinet at home, right next to the New Kids on the Block trading card poster I bought on ebay.
We’re headed to the Badlands next, and trying to scare up a few Galaxie owners along the way.
